Siba
e a Fuloresta do Samba
The cousins of
Buena Vista Social Club
As an eminent member of the Mestre Ambrosio posse,
the violinist Siba gathered, for his first solo
album, a group of musicians originating from the
Zona da Mata in the north of Pernambuco. Vibrating
incarnation of the energetic Brazilian folklore,
the fusion of this exceptional musician with Fuloresta,
often compared to Buena Vista Social Club, leads
the way for the exploration of extraordinary musical
horizons. |

Mind the party atmosphere! Five boisterous and
gaily coloured “batucadas” - Surdôreyes,
Samba Lattice, Arte Popular, Social Maracana Band
and Apito – will make the first move in
a resolutely festive and explosive festival, accompanied
in their frenzy by the “Equipe de Nuit”,
the special effects section of the Commandos Percu.
There will be explosions, songs, shouts and dances:
is there a best way to begin the festival? ! |

Forró Ball
The Occitano-Brazilian
fever
Orquestra do Fubá - Heleno dos
8 Baixos - Fabulous Trobadors - Femmouzes T -
Bombes 2 Bal
Project in collaboration with Escambiar
All the choreographic madnesses will be allowed
this evening! The “forró” (from
the English "for all") which, after
the Nordeste, conquered the whole Brazil, knocks
down the frontiers of age, style and rhythm as
everyone adds his contribution to this festive
popular ball. Two cultures will strike on stage:
the diatonic accordion virtuoso, Heleno dos 8
Baixos and the successful alchemy between traditional
and modern styles tinged with samba, bossa nova
and funk of Orquestra do Fubá. They will
share the stage with various musicians from Toulouse,
true lovers of the South American continent: the
sparkling Bombes 2 Ball and the Femmouzes T as
well as Fabulous Trobadors, the two wizards with
language and rhythm! |

Trio
Madeira Brasil
The highlight of
choro
Refinement and energy rule over the destiny of
this trio composed of Ronaldo do Bandolim, Zé
Paulo Becker and Marcello Gonçalves. These
Masters of "popular chamber music" give
substance to the true Brazilian popular music,
the "choro", which means “tear"
in Portuguese. The two guitars and the mandolin
of the Trio Madeira plunge back into the source
of a music brought up to date in the Seventies
and which has today many followers among the young
generation. |

Djambi
Brazilian-style
reggae
Encounters, experiences and rhythms collected
from around the world are the staple diet of these
tireless globe-trotters. The eight members of
this band stand up for Brazilian reggae and many
other types of music. A positive and refreshing
open-mindedness shows in their sensitive texts
and music. This earned them the Award for the
best Brazilian reggae artist given by the alternative
circuit in 2002. Strong temperaments...

Seu
Jorge
Charismatic and
amazing – 2004 discovery
Committed loudmouth and great seducer, this thirty-year-old
deep-voiced Carioca is a star in Brazil since
his role in “City of God” directed
by Fernando Meirelles. His nature and his talent
forged in the street and the “favelas”
and in samba groups (Farofa Carioca) then hip-hop
groups (Planet Hemp), Mister Jorge is mapping
out his promising future in music and cinema.
The last demonstrations of his talent are obvious
in the sumptuous Cru album and in his performance
in Wes Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic,
with Bill Murray and Angelica Huston. It is impossible
to resist the pop samba mixed with blues made
by this true charmer whose presence on stage is
claimed by David Bowie for his next tour! |

Marcelo
D2
Carioca rap
Marked by the hardships of life, Marcelo Maldonado
Gomes Peixoto known as Marcelo D2 trails his Carioca
silhouette and his cheeky humour around various
rhythms such as samba and funk mixed with scratches
and coaxer choruses. And this recipe is a success
for this talented artist who searches for the
perfect beat (Á procura da batida perfeita).
Humour and energy on stage complete ideally the
portrait of a young artist, interesting in many
respects. |

legend revisited

Paulo Moura – Yamandú Costa
– Armandinho – Marcos Suzano
As a major artist in the second half of the 20th
century and inventor of bossa nova, Tom Jobim
deserved a tribute! His prestigious instrumentalist
peers, currently in the spotlight in Brazil -
Armandinho, Paulo Moura, Marcos Suzano and Yamandú
Costa - joined their talents to give the Master’s
melodies a new lease of life. They invite us to
a voyage through bossa nova on familiar and adored

Machado Duo
The baião
and frevo virtuosos
Celso Machado – Carlinhos Machado
This famous guitarist, percussionist and instrumentalist
of genius is a real school of samba! Curious about
everything, joyous, playful and sensitive, he
sets the music scene of his dreams each time he
meets the audience. His sense of rhythm borrows
the best from the brass of João Gilberto
or João Bosco. The perception of his music
is like a voyage in bossa nova territory. He will
be accompanied by Carlinhos Machado to communicate
even more deeply the fervour of his country and
his art. |

& Le Big Band du Conservatoire National de

Staggering
Jazz
On the occasion of his 69th birthday, Hermeto
Pascoal will plunge us into one of his boisterous
sets which earned him the status of figurehead
of Brazilian jazz. This uncontrollable "wizard"
aroused the curiosity and generated the respect
of the most talented artists, Davis Miles, Gil
Evans… His spontaneity, his innate sense
of composition and his innovative approach also
influenced the younger generation of jazz musicians.
So, the meeting with Le Big Band du Conservatoire
National de Région could prove to be full
of intense moments... |

Velha
Guarda Da Portela
The gardians of
the temple of samba
These guardians of the samba tradition and members
of this respected and adulated "old guard"
keep an eye open for trouble but do not neglect
the future. This true institution created in 1970
by the singer, Paulinho da Viola, on the basis
of the Portela de Madureira samba school (founded
in 1930 in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro), perpetuates
and feeds the tradition dictated by the elders,
Antônio Caetano, Alberto Lonato, Manacéa,
João da Gente and Ventura. Tirelessly,
they tell "the history of a people which
tries to exist and whose identity took shape in
marginality" in spite of the repression against
the promoters of samba which lasted until the
40s. Purism and sincerity are expected! |

Classical and sophisticated
Jazz
Cesar Camargo Mariano / Romero Lubambo
His swing and his left hand brought Cesar Camargo
fame. Television, advertising but also great names
of Brazilian popular music – João
Bosco, Chico Buarque or Gilberto Gil - had recourse
to his talent for jazz. For his part, the Carioca
Romero Lumambo is considered to be one of the
best guitarists by international music criticism.
They will play at the ideal moment, by starlight... |

Madrugada
Sweet melodies
and ethereal sambas
At daybreak when the night is nearing its end,
this is "madrugada": the sambas stemming
from the carioca heritage and nicely reproduced
by this group composed of seven French musicians
have a particular depth. Popular songs, wild sambas
and sweetnesses without soppiness create an exceptional
atmosphere. An excellent sound conditioning... |

Beth
Carvalho
The Diva of the
Rio Carnival
Her name resounds with a thousand colors: Elizabeth
Santos Leal de Carvalho. Her career is extraordinary:
a long time before the age of ten, her hearing
is formed by the sambas tones of the 50s. She
recorded her first single in 1965 and appeared
on television one year later. At the end of the
60s, Beth Carvalho had already become a figure
and a voice in Brazil while the Generals were
ruling supreme over the country. In the meantime,
she speaks to the common people by rehabilitating
and discovering samba musicians and composers.
Wilful and curious by nature, she brings popular
artists into line with current tastes and reconsiders
the sound of their samba by introducing instruments
such as the banjo. Very successful in the fairs,
the country adopts her tones and proclaims Beth
the Queen of Samba and the Diva of the Torreiros.
World-famous after 30 years of career and 25 records
to her credit, the diva always attracts the crowds… |

Frenetic Samba-funk
Ten Masters of samba percussions directed by Ivo
Meirelles move into the attack, supported by a
brass section. On funk rhythms mixed with a collection
of Brazilian "dance music" standards,
this energetic team of musicians stemming from
the mythical school of samba, Mangueira, fight
for rhythm and celebration. Carnival is no longer
in Rio, it takes place by the river Garonne... |

An Afro-Brazilian
Cocktail
Celso Machado / Carlinhos Machado /
Sérgio Machado
Surrounded by his folks - Carlinhos Machado and
Sérgio Machado -, Celso Machado gives free
expression to this music that he is so fond of.
A kind of Afro-Brazilian cocktail in which makeshift
instruments, body percussions and “surdo”,
the agogô bell or the “tamborim”
mix together. There are no limits! |

Renata
Rosa & Zunido da Mata
The Queen of Coco
First, her voice: powerful, cheerful and touching.
Then, her approach: since her childhood, Renata,
born in the South of Brazil, crosses the regions
of Nordeste - the State of Pernambuco –
to collect and then to express in her own way
the traditional songs and dances from these regions.
Rural Maracatú, coco samba, forró,
cavala-marinho give rhythm to her work as an ethnomusicologist
and an artist, the traditional rural violin, the
"rabeca" accompanying her approach of
culture smuggler. At the age of 28, she is already
fond of these "poem-songs" inspired
by the songs of “cabocla” women –
mixed-race – recalling work and popular
rites. A contagious sincerity and joy are the
characteristic features of her shows full of atypical
percussions, strings and dances. |

Egberto
Gismonti,
Fayçal Karoui & L’Orchestre National
du Capitole de Toulouse
New creation
Egberto Gismonti is a guitarist, a pianist, a
composer who loves knocking down the musical frontiers
by mixing "erudite" and popular musics
all along a career marked by mixing. Like Baden
Powell, Villa Lobos or João Gilberto, he
experiments, explores and finds true happiness
with traditional musicians - Ravel or Schönberg
-, jazz - Django Reinhardt, Charlie Haden or Jan
Garbarek -. He even confesses that he has a weakness
for the rock'n'roll of Jimi Hendrix! There is
nothing surprising about that since her Brazilian
orchestral music will meet the "erudite"
art produced by the Orchestre National du Capitole
de Toulouse conducted by Fayçal Karaoui.
A new creation, an exquisite moment of communion,
will result from the residence of the Brazilian
musician among the classical musicians from the
Toulouse Orchestra.

DJ
Dolores e a Aparelhagem
The new wave of
Brazilian electro music
As a blend of traditional music from the Nordeste
and electro-rock'n'roll, the hybrid drum'n'bass
productions of this native of Recife shake up
the habits and carry the day! So, he easily found
a place, during the 90s, among the instigators
of the Mangue Beat movement, revolted against
the "good taste" of his elders, Tom
Ze, Caetano Veloso or Gilberto Gil. Judicious
ethno-electronic combinations, his sets owe a
lot to the presence of the singer Isaar França,
the “rabeca” violin of Maciel Salustiano,
the guitar of Fabio Trummer and the percussions
of Mr Jam. Breathtaking! |
